Margarit Aleksaniants (1838-1902)

Margarit was a copier and painter. The virgin Eghisabet Sargsian was her teacher in Shushi. Once during her visit to Tatev monastery she wished to see a Gospel, but she was refused, because due to church rules women had no right to touch the sacredness. Being very upset because of this incident Margarit decided to write a Gospel like this. She created a book of calligraphy and sent it to Venice for publishing (which remained unpublished after her husband’s death). She created another book as well called “Armenian calligraphy”, which was published in Tbilisi in 1891. Margarit copied and painted a Gospel and gave it to Ejmiadzin’s museum[1].
