Mariam Tumanyan (July 21(28), 1870, Tbilisi-1947, Tbilisi), Armenian cultural figure

Mariam had great respect for Armenian cultural figures whom she was always helping materially and ideologically. She was deputy chairman of the Tiflis Armenian Charity Company and even led the Theatrical Union for several years. Mariam co-worked in several translated publications by Hovhannes Tumanyan. In 1902, together with Gabriel Sundukian, she founded the Armenian Dramatic Society in Tbilisi (she was the president in 1903-1907), she also participated in the creation of the People’s Theater in Havlabar. In 1908 she established a printing house under the name “Princess M. Tumanyan and friends” that was publishing children’s books with colored paintings. She helped financially Armenian writers. After the establishment of the Soviet power, she was a member of the Armenian Relief Society (ARS), a correspondent for the “Karmir tsiler” and “Proletar” newspapers.
